Bluegrass Music Denmark, BMD, is a Danish group dedicated to the promotion of bluegrass music in Denmark. Our main activity is the presentation of bluegrass concerts in Copenhagen. The concerts are held at Karens Minde Culture Center in the southern part of Copenhagen. The address is: Wagnersvej 19, 2450 Copenhagen SV. The venue is easy to get to. It is just a 5- minute walk from Sjælør S-train Station, or a short walk from the Stubmølle or Mozarts Plads stops on busline 3A. If you are driving, it is just off of the Ring 02 route. Here is a link to a map: http://map.krak.dk/m/phja2
Our concerts are normally held on Friday evenings at 8:00 pm and are open to all, no reservations or pre-sale of tickets needed. The concerts take place in a comfortable concert/café atmosphere, where beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee and light snacks are available. Ticket prices for normal concerts are 120 Danish Kroner for non-members, 100 Danish Kroner for BMD members.
BMD membership is 150 Danish Kroner per year and includes discounts at all concerts, an annual newsletter and notification of events of interest. The membership also supports the website that you are currently using.
Bands we have listened to:
We do our best to present quality music, and have concerts by both Danish and international bands. We have been fortunate to have had concerts by two bands who have been voted the best band in Europe in 2007 and 2009: G2 from Sweden and Downtown Ramblers, also from Sweden. Some of the other European bands performing at our concerts recently have been Monogram, G-Runs and Roses, and Rolls Boys from the Czech republic, Sons of Navarone from Belgium, Hillfillies, High on Grass, and Blue Mountain Boys from Sweden, Looping Brothers from Germany, and Bebbe Gambetta from Italy. We are also fortunate to frequently have visits from top bands from the USA, including Special Consensus, Chris Stuart, Jeanette Williams, Hickory Project, Chris Jones, Kathy Kallick, Sawmill Road, Laurie Lewis and Roger Williams with Amy Gallatin, and many more through the years.
Most Danish bands have appeared on our stage as well, including Special Blend, Blue Dolls, Bluegrass Boulevard, Freewheeling, Græsset Gror, the Copenhagen Mountain Boys, Train 45 and Græshopperne.
BMD is always looking for quality performers for our concerts. If your group is coming to northern Europe in the future, let us know, and send some sample music. It could be that we can arrange something.
Concert schedules are available here on the website under the menu item: “Koncertkalender”. If you would like to be informed about upcoming events, you can join our mailing list and receive notices of upcoming concerts. Currently, we send announcements in Danish, but you can easily see the dates, times and performers in these announcements. Should we have a sufficient number of requests, we will consider sending announcements in English.
Learn to play bluegrass:
Some of our members offer instruction in playing bluegrass music. Contact information is available in the menu item “lær at spille bluegrass” here on the website.
If you are visiting Denmark and would like to attend a concert, you are most welcome. If you will be here for an extended stay, and are interested in or play bluegrass music, let us know and we’ll see what happens. Some of our members get together frequently for jam sessions, and we are always looking for new musicians. Several international visitors have played with Danish bluegrass bands while staying in Denmark.
BMD also participates in international bluegrass activities, with memberships in the European Bluegrass Music Association and the International Bluegrass Music Association.
